ANTHROPIA

ANTHROPIA is a ceremonial art installation that demands full attention from its audience. It approaches the subject of enlightenment in a contemporary context, exploring the delicate borderlands between the virtual and the real. The road to ANTHROPIA is a journey of trial and transformation, where the only way to go is beyond.

THE WORK

ANTHROPIA is a collaborative and interdisciplinary work created by Johan Knattrup Jensen, Therese Willstedt, Rikke Benborg, Ali Abbasi, and Julian Juhlin. Together the five artists comprise the titles of theatre director, video artist, scenographer, author, film director and performance artist, choreographer and costume designer. They all work within different aesthetic practices and carry distinct approaches to the art of storytelling. The work is produced by Mads Damsbo.

Johan Knattrup Jensen is the curating artist leading the project and he devised the thematic, technological, and methodical framework of the collaboration. During an intense two-week workshop at KULTURVÆRFTET in Helsingør, May 2017, the artists produced a series of cinematic works that tied together as chapters of a narrative structure, evocatively entitled ‘ANTHROPIA’ - the place of humankind. Each artist was given the title of their chapter and aided by a dedicated producer and a team of creative talents. The collective task was to produce five 360° stereoscopic video art works, experienced by the audience in a virtual environment, which correlates spatially with a real-life physical scenography.

Creating five distinct artworks, experienced by the audience as a cohesive whole, is a challenging achievement. In order to accomplish this contradictory goal, the artists had to pass through a series of ritualized exercises in the development of their works. This methodology was applied to bring about a collective consciousness, an artistic hive mind, deeply aware of the interrelationship between chapters and the audience’s journey through the entire narrative. During the process of creating ANTHROPIA the rallying cry was always clear: Where we want the audience to go, we have gone ourselves.

TRAVERSE

ANTHROPIA was realized through TRAVERSE - an annual laboratory and method bringing together an array of creative forces in order to produce original and groundbreaking cross media art, which challenges, extends and merges the territories of the visual, narrative and performing arts.

Each year a curating artist leads the production and has the main responsibility for the artistic vision and aesthetic qualities. Accordingly, the curating artist sets the frame of the collaboration and the artwork itself, choosing the theme, technology, and methodical approach. The curating artist puts together a team of progressive artists that have no practical experience with the chosen technology or media. Together they must concentrate their efforts and create an original, unified work within a very short period of time. Their process must follow certain dogmas, which change from year to year.

TRAVERSE is not only a creative method or a work of cross media art - the ambition is to create a movement and institution, which will pioneer the development of new aesthetic phenomena. The purpose of TRAVERSE is to establish a platform for the generation and sharing of knowledge and practical experience, in order to initiate a durable and thoughtful advancement towards new artistic paradigms.
